[Encore Press: Mercury Living Presence 50] This is Franck’s only smoked silver symphony in the cyclic form, a unique idiom, with religious and sensual sounds inherent in its austerity, and a sense of serene contemplation and philosophical submergence. The second symphony in a typical classical form, full of melancholic melodies, demonstrates Rachmaninoff’s ability as a symphonic composer. These two masterpieces of the Romantic symphony are performed with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, which Pallée served as music director and established a golden age for the orchestra. Rubidium clock cutting. [Performed by] Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Conductor: Paul Palais
