The song cycle “The Life of Mary” is known as a favorite of pianist Glenn Gould, and many people may have been introduced to this music in the process of getting to know Gould. This song cycle is based on a series of poems by Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke, and faithfully depicts Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, from her birth to her death. Hindemith himself is said to have regarded it as “the best of my works so far,” and although the first draft version was written around 1923, the 1948 revised version here is said to be a little gentler in expression and less demanding on the singers than the youthful first draft version. This is a beautiful performance by Harnisch and Schulze with both calmness and serenity.Naxos Japan
