The new album by Mayako Muroi, who was born in April 1921 and is still “active throughout her life,” is a collection of Haydn’s piano sonatas, including one of her latest recordings from January 2017 and two pieces she has performed in concert for the past several years. Her pianism knows no word of decline. She presents Haydn’s sonatas, which are simple in conception and difficult to color with showy technique, to us listeners with a lightness that could be described as flexible and unflappable.
