Philippe de Monte was a Flemish composer, vocalist, and music teacher of late Renaissance music, and the most influential composer of madrigals in the late 16th century. A prolific composer, he left behind a varied body of both religious and secular music, culminating in a late style that emphasizes short motives and homophonic textures. The Hilliard Ensemble and a consort led by recorder player Case Bucke, who was a pupil of Bruchen (and also includes Bruce Dickey and Toyohiko Sato), have brought De Monte’s music back to life in this masterful performance.
