Tower Records “Sony Classical” Special Selection 9th season. As a “special project commemorating the 30th anniversary of Eugene Ormandy’s death,” Tower Records will release 10 titles from the vast amount of recordings Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra made for Sony Classical and RCA, including the quintessential stereo recordings. The rich orchestral sound of the Philadelphia Orchestra, with its thick string section at its core, flawless woodwinds, and beautiful brass, has been preserved, and the orchestra’s peak of 20th century orchestral art, from the vigorous 1950s and 1960s to the increasingly mature and deep 1970s, is beautifully engraved on these recordings. ■Ormandi recorded seven pieces of ballet music on two CDs in the 1960s, which can be considered the essence of ballet music. From “Les Sylphides,” a beautiful orchestral arrangement of Chopin’s piano piece, to Stravinsky’s “Petrushka” (a rare suite version), each piece is a masterpiece that shines like a jewel. The value of Ormandy and Filafidelphia’s masterful performance, which captures all the charm in each piece, is not diminished even after listening to it now.
