Description

The string quartet named after “Ardeo” (Latin for “I burn”) is an ensemble formed in 2001 at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris. The four women, including Osaka-born Misa Liang, a violinist based in France and Japan, and Japanese viola player Yuko Hara, approach their music with a fiery passion that literally burns, and they have been very successful. On this album, the women perform a string quartet version of Bach’s masterpiece “Goltberg Variations. The arrangement was made by François Maymun, a composer the girls met and played with about 10 years ago, who had long wanted to arrange the “Goltberg Variations” for string quartet. By closely observing the arrangement process, the members gained a deep understanding of “Maymun’s version of Gortberg,” and here was born an excellent and sympathetic performance.
