This is the fifth and sixth installment of the highly successful “Jazz Collection 1000” series, released four times in 2014 (February, March, September, and October: 50 titles each). As with the previous four releases, 100 titles from Sony Music’s extensive jazz catalog, centered on the two major U.S. labels Columbia and RCA, are included, including first CD releases of long-awaited works and rare works that are currently difficult to obtain (Vol. 5: 50 titles released on October 14; Vol. 6: 50 titles released on November 6). The special price is 1,000 yen plus tax (1,500 yen plus tax for the 2-disc set). All titles include new liner notes. This is the album that brought Charles Mingus, the greatest bass player/composer in the modern jazz world, to fame. The immortal masterpieces that remain in Mingus’ history were born from this album, including “Fable of Governor Faubus,” which denounced racial discrimination, “Boogie Stop Shuffle,” which was revived in the British movie “Beginners,” and “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat,” which was also featured by Jeff Beck and Joni Mitchell.
