Wolfgang Lüpsum, an organist who studied with Helmut Walcha and Marie-Claire Alain and has made extensive recordings, including two complete Bach collections, visited Japan in 2016 and charmed audiences with his specialty, Bach. The Goltberg Variations are his specialty, and on this album he performs them on the lute harpsichord (= lautenwerk). The lute harpsichord differs from a normal harpsichord in that it has gut strings instead of metal strings (it is said that the lute harpsichord started with keys attached to its body), and it is known that Bach was particularly fond of it because of its beautiful bass and deep sound. However, the instrument used at that time does not exist, and this recording uses an instrument restored by the maker Keith Hill. This performance sheds new light on Bach’s masterpieces with its innovative sound.Naxos Japan
