This is the fifth installment of the “Shinichi Fukuda Guitar Discovery Series,” which began in 2013 with a desire to discover and present to the world outstanding talents with great promise for the future. Takuya Okamoto studied with Alvaro Pieri at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where he completed his master’s degree in 2018 with the highest unanimous honors. In Vienna, he also studied historical performance and lute playing methods. He won the second prize at the Alhambra International Guitar Competition in Spain. The theme of the selection is “the next realm that classical guitar is aiming for,” and he has placed composers of the 21st century such as Callahan, Klenjanes, Metheny, and so on. The piece “Prelude” was created during Okamoto’s self-imposed retirement from Corona, and was dedicated to Okamoto.
