[Symphony No. 5 was received favorably by the former Soviet state as a work that clearly portrays the ideals and triumphs of socialism, but it is often seen as a pandering composition by Shostakovich, who was continually accused of being anti-national. The recording of the 5th is a masterpiece that beautifully captures the tragic nature of the era in which it was written. This live recording of the monumental concert at the Saito Kinen Festival in 2006, which celebrated the 100th anniversary of Shostakovich’s birth, is a masterpiece. The finale begins at a tempo so slow that it seems as if the audience will stop, and the ensemble’s clear, unwavering sound is superb, even in the tremendous Achilleleland that follows.
