Rhode Island’s renowned Newport Jazz Festival was Ray Charles ‘ initiation into the live jazz circuit, even though he was slated to play on the festival’s first “Blues Night.”
On Ray Charles at Newport, the band and music rock righteously, and the Newport appearance sealed Charles’ acceptance as a serious talent by the so- called jazz establishment. At the end of 1958, Down Beat magazine named Ray Charles “Best Male Star”.
