Description
Guedra Guedra, the electronic project of Moroccan producer Abdellah M. Hassak, presents his second album, Mutant. The album fuses analogue synths, drum machines, and field recordings from Morocco, Guinea, and Tanzania, blending African heritage with genres like techno, bass, and dub.
Mutant explores themes of Pan-Africanism, identity, and decolonisation. “African rhythm is not just a pulse; it’s a map of life, expressing social complexity and spirituality,” says Abdellah. His work challenges Western production tools to capture these rich sounds, celebrating resistance through cultural preservation.
Abdellah, who performs with a mask by Moroccan artist Meryem Aboulouafa, connects to Morocco’s cultural roots. The mask is inspired by the veils worn by the Zayan people during communal rituals.
The first single, “Drift of Drummer,” was inspired by Guinea’s Kouroussa, where the djembé drum energised workers. The song’s video, directed by Romain Cherbonnier, highlights African percussion as the heartbeat of life itself.
