The first leader album by Hitoshi Nakajima, a bassist based in Azumino, Shinshu, Japan, is a collection of original piano trio works with his hometown musicians, produced by Toshihiro Akamatsu, one of the leading vibraphone players in Japan. The trio is composed of Shinichiro Mochizuki (pf), who has pursued his own unique worldview through his two leader albums “Visionary” and “Another Vision,” and Manabu Hashimoto (ds), who is active in non-genre and is trusted by many musicians in Japan, including the Daiki Agawa Trio and Hitomi Nishiyama NHORHM. The sound spun out by the trio, while inheriting the spirit of jazz, has a unique aesthetic reminiscent of the scenery of Azumino, Shinshu, clad in the silence implied by the album title “Pioggia” (rain). Also, Toshihiro Akamatsu (Vib) and Hikari Ichihara (tp,flh), who participated in Akamatsu’s latest work “Synonym”, play on three and two guest tracks, respectively. They add color to the monochrome world of the album. The album features nine songs, including “North Plants,” written by Akamatsu to celebrate Nakajima’s departure, original songs written by all members for this album, and two covers of songs by Ralph Tawner and Kenny Hoyler, two of the most famous artists in the ECM sound.
