Gerhard Frommel was born in Karlsruhe in 1906. He was a professor of composition at the University of Stuttgart for a time, but because he never deviated from tonality and never changed his late Romantic style, he was unable to keep up with the violent changes of the times and was politically regarded as a fascist, and he died a lonely man. The world premiere of his Symphony No. 1, a late Romantic style work with a marked influence of Bruckner and Wagner, was given in 1942 by the Vienna Philharmonic under Furtwängler’s direction.Naxos Japan
