Dudok String Quartet
:
This is the third album of the Amsterdam Dudok Quartet on the Resonus label, titled “Solitude. The album includes the String Quartet No. 6, in which Mendelssohn is said to have expressed the loss of his beloved sister Fanny; Josquin’s “Mille regretz,” in which he laments the loss of his lover; Weinberg’s String Quartet No. 3, in which he sings of anger, sorrow, and emptiness over the war; the opera Shostakovich’s “Elegy,” based on the aria in “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk” in which Caterina sings of her strong sense of entrapment, and finally a work by Gesualdo, who spent the latter half of his life in penitence and solitude due to the enormity of his transgressions. This is a piece that allows the listener to take time to appreciate the “solitude” depicted in music without using words.Naxos Japan
