Born in Dresden, Udo Zimmermann sang in the Dresden Holy Cross Choir conducted by Mauesberger as a child. He is known as a composer of operas such as “White Roses,” which was also performed in Japan, and his works always include issues that raise questions about society. This “Lamentations of Peace” was composed in 1982 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. The text is a clever combination of a poem by St. Francis of Assisi and poems by 20th century German poets.
