The Czech composer Josef Suk composed the symphony “Asrael” at the age of 32. The title “Asrael” refers to the name of an angel who carries the spirits of the dead. The work reflects Suk’s feelings of double grief after the death of his father-in-law Dvořák and his wife (Dvořák’s daughter) Ottilje. Many Czech conductors have made this work an important part of their repertoire, and it was no different for Ančer, but there have only been private recordings with the Cleveland Orchestra, and this performance is the only official “Asrael” recording. Crachey’s “Serenata” is full of humor. Anchel makes the most of the orchestra’s elegant and majestic tone, and the performance is enchanting.
