Janacek’s two string quartets were composed between the First and Second World Wars. The first, entitled “Kreutzer Sonata,” was inspired not by Beethoven but by Tolstoy’s novel of the same name, and is an excellent work that carefully and relentlessly follows the novel’s synopsis in sound, despite its length of about 15 minutes. No. 2 is a personal narrative piece inspired by Janacek’s admirer, Camilla Stoslová. It is said that the viola in action represents her. The Atzies String Quartet is an ensemble of players who were trained by the Juilliard Quartet, and has been active since 2006, releasing four albums of music ranging from Haydn to Shostakovich.Naxos Japan
