German pianist Lars Forkert is highly acclaimed, having been selected as the first “Pianist in Residence” with the Berlin Philharmonic in 2003/04, and in recent years he has attracted attention not only as a soloist but also as a chamber musician. This is a concerto of two Beethoven concertos performed by the Royal Northern Sinfonia, of which he is the musical director. The first concerto is an ambitious work by the 25-year-old Beethoven. Forkert recorded this piece in 1995, but this new recording is even more appealing for its free and unrestrained expression that explodes with his own will. The magnificent No. 5 is also played with full of tension, making the most of the heavy piano tone. The first in Folkert’s “Beethoven: Piano Concerto Series,” recorded in 2016/2017.
