Christian Thielemann, who also serves as Principal Conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden and General Music Director of the Salzburg Easter Festival, is regarded as a world master of German music in both name and reality. He is now one of the most important conductors of the Vienna Philharmonic, and their ongoing big project “Bruckner: The Complete Symphonies” has been attracting a great deal of attention. The fourth recording is Bruckner’s No. 2 in C minor, one of the most popular early symphonies by Bruckner. Although it was the fourth symphony in the order of composition, this was the second to be numbered. From the beginning of the first movement, the clear sound like a wind crossing a plateau catches the ear. The beauty of the long, breathy melody of the second movement, Andante, is also exceptional. Thielemann’s fluid interpretation of Callaghan’s second draft, which accentuates the graceful and rich sound of the Vienna Philharmonic, is a perfect match for this work. (C)RS
