Brown Sugar is the debut critically-acclaimed album by Richmond, Virginia native D’Angelo. Pioneering the neo soul sound, the album blends R&B, soul, funk, and jazz with D’Angelo handling most of the instrumentation.
D’Angelo recorded Brown Sugar’s demos on a four-track in his Richmond basement, then moving to New York City when his demos were complete. The album was recorded from 1993-1995 primarily in Battery Studios and written and produced by Raphael Saadiq, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Bob Power.
