[Best Classics 100] Chopin’s piano concertos were written when he was 19 and 20 years old, but they are actually famous for being difficult to play. The third movement of No. 1 is full of brilliant phrases, and the second, which was composed earlier, is a work that is sure to make pianists weep if played too leniently. However, Rubinstein’s playing is overflowing with love, and he never loses sight of himself in the midst of love. With reliable backing, he accurately portrays the passion of the young Chopin in both pieces. Recorded: June 8 & 9, 1961 and October 1, 1968 at Walthamstow Assembly Hall, London, and Academy of Music, Philadelphia.
