Horace Andy’s 1975 LP Get Wise grabs up a clutch of early singles cut with producer Phil Pratt during the singer’s formative years, when he was still in his teens but already wielding that unmistakable falsetto. The tracks, dubbed between 1972 and 1974 at a whopping studio selection between Channel One, Black Ark, Dynamic Sound and Randy’s Studio 17, find Andy reframing his better-known hits with new lyrics and arrangements: ‘Root Of All Evil’ reworks ‘Money, Money’, while ‘I Don’t Want To Be Outside’ echoes ‘Zion Gate’. Backed by a rotating cast from The Soul Syndicate Band, including session royalty like Sly & Robbie, Family Man Barrett and Chinna Smith, these are prime cuts from the golden era of Kingston studios.
